Block Porn Websites On Your Computer Without Using Any Software

1. Block Porn Websites By Editing Hosts File

Before going into the how to guide, let me tell you what is hosts file and how it works:
According to Wikipedia, "The hosts file is a computer file used by an operating system to map host names to IP addresses."
That is, the host file is the one that your computer uses before it scans external DNS servers for identifying the ip address of a domain name . Yes, the hosts file is your local dns!

Let's start blocking....

How To Block Porn Sites:

First locate your host file...If you are using windows, go to C > windows > System32 > Drivers > etc.

If you are using Mac, open Finder and, in Finder's menu bar, select Go > Go to Folder. In the box, type the following location and press Return.

/private/etc/hosts

Then copy the file named "hosts" to your desktop. Now you can edit the host file.

Double click on the hosts file and then select notepad, and click "OK"

Then enter domain names of porn websites along with your local host's ip address.

That is,

127.0.0.1            www.porn-website-name.com
127.0.0.1            www.domain-name-of-porn-site.com

After adding the websites to the hosts file, save the file. Then move the file to C > windows > System32 > Drivers > etc (replace the existing file).

2.  Block Porn Websites Using DNS Services

Yes, you can block porn websites using DNS services. Here is how to do it:

  • Using OpenDNS:

Then create a free account by entering your information...

After creating the account, Open "network and sharing center" in windows and then click on the "connections". Below window appears:

Then click on "Properties"...... select "Internet Protocol version 4(TCP/IPv4)" and then click on "properties" button. Below window appears:

Change the ip address of "Preferred DNS server" to 208.67.222.222 and then change "Alternate DNS server" to 208.67.220.220. Then click "OK".

If you are using Mac computer, click on your "Apple"  menu and choose "System Preferences".

Then Double-Click on the "Network" icon.....

Go to the "TCP/IP" tab. If your computer is configured to use a dynamic IP address, (notice "Using DHCP" in the drop-down box next to "Configure"). This is where you can change your DNS settings, by entering the appropriate DNS servers in the "DNS Servers" box.

Enter DNS server addresses.

Apply your settings by clicking the "Apply Now" button.

After changing the DNS server addresses, follow this:

Go to your OpenDNS dashboard: https://www.opendns.com/dashboard/settings/

Click on "Add to this network" button, the below window appears:

Select "low" and click on the "Apply" button to block pornography.

We recommend you to select the "Moderate" filtering level for better security.

Alternate DNS: 199.85.127.30
