Footprinting Explained


Footprinting is the one of the method, prior to launch an attack against a website or an organisation. It is the security profiling of an organisation. It is the method of a malicious hacker, prior to launch an attack. As the wise words "If you know your enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the results of a hundred battles", by knowing the details of an organisation or website, an attack can be implemented successfully. So information about the target is needed as much as possible.

Hackers uses many tools to gather information about the target

To gather information about a website or webserver:

www.domaintools.com  - You can use this website to gather informations of target website.


From the above website, you could be able to collect the following information about target.
  • Whois information
  • E mail address 
  • Server informations
  • Other websites that hosted in the particular server(Reverse ip)
  • Owner of website
  • Domain registrar
For the above information, just query the "whois lookup" with the target website domain name. By using reverse ip lookup an attacker can hack the whole server, if one of the website in that server is vulnerable.
